The following is a summary of events and activities
that were held across Saskatchewan during the month
of February:
The Mayors
and City Councils of the following cities proclaimed
February 2008 as Psychology Month:
Saskatoon
Regina
Weyburn
Yorkton
Battleford
North Battleford
The Saskatoon
and Regina proclamations were advertised in the local
newspapers with a half-page advertisement that discussed
“What is a Psychologist?” The article
was entitled, “ Psychologists Bring Expertise
to Many Sectors of Society” and was accompanied
by a picture of the Mayor of Saskatoon with representatives
from the Advocacy Committee; Darcia Evans and Marilyn
Macdonald, registered psychologists. A copy of the
official proclamation accompanied the Regina advertisement.
The Weyburn
proclamation was also in the local newspaper and was
accompanied by a picture of Pat Podjan, a local registered
Psychologist and Mayor of Weyburn. The Yorkton proclamation
was advertised in three of their local newspapers;
Yorkton This Week, This Week Marketplace and Briefly
News. Thank you to Rik Cherland, Pat and Bonnie Flahr
for their efforts.
Rik Cherland,
a registered psychologist from Yorkton attended a
City Council meeting where the proclamation for Psychology
Month was discussed. This meeting and Rik’s
presentation was then shown on the local Access 7
channel.
Linda Tholl,
a registered psychologist from Regina was interviewed
on CBC television for a segment on the topic of blended
families. The interview went so well that they have
asked her to do another interview.
Danielle
Rozon, an Early Childhood Psychologist with Saskatoon
Public Health Services wrote an article for the local
weekly newspaper on the topic of “What is an
Early Childhood Psychologist? She also advertised
Psychology Month at one of the Public Health offices
and plans to advertise psychology month 2009 in all
the region’s health offices.
Bonnie
Flahr, a registered psychologist who resides in North
Battleford spoke to the psychology students at John
Paul II Collegiate and provided hand-outs to the students.
Jason Peebles,
a registered psychologist from Regina provided noon
lunch bag lecture series at the Regina Public Library
each Wednesday in February on various topics such
as phobias, addictions and others.
TGIF evenings
were held on the last Friday in February at local
restaurants in Regina and Saskatoon. This provided
a chance for psychologists to visit with their colleagues
and network.
Ann Carson-Tempier
placed posters throughout the University of Saskatchewan
advertising the TGIF evening and Psychology Month
with the purpose of engaging psychology students.
The “What
is a Psychologist?” pamphlet was distributed
throughout Saskatchewan to schools, health region
offices and private practice offices. Psychologists
throughout the province also distributed these pamphlets
in their work settings. Pamphlets, posters and book
marks were made available at the Saskatchewan Education
Psychologist’s annual fall conference.
Psychologists
in Saskatchewan were emailed encouraging them to become
involved with Psychology month and to display their
Psychology Month poster that was distributed to all
psychologists in the province in 2007. Thank you to
Wendy at the College for distributing these emails.
The Saskatoon
Health Region psychologists held their annual eat,
meet and learn session in February hosted by the Health
Region’s Professional Leader of Psychology,
Dr. Fern Stockdale-Winder. Dr. Philip Carverhill spoke
on the topic of grief.
La Ronge
and Yorkton area psychologists got together in their
respective communities to network and discuss local
issues.
Thank you to everyone who assisted with making Psychology
month 2008 a success in Saskatchewan.
