The Mayors and City Councils of the following cities proclaimed February 2008 as Psychology Month:

Saskatoon
Regina
Weyburn
Yorkton
Battleford
North Battleford

The Saskatoon and Regina proclamations were advertised in the local newspapers with a half-page advertisement that discussed “What is a Psychologist?” The article was entitled, “ Psychologists Bring Expertise to Many Sectors of Society” and was accompanied by a picture of the Mayor of Saskatoon with representatives from the Advocacy Committee; Darcia Evans and Marilyn Macdonald, registered psychologists. A copy of the official proclamation accompanied the Regina advertisement.

The Weyburn proclamation was also in the local newspaper and was accompanied by a picture of Pat Podjan, a local registered Psychologist and Mayor of Weyburn. The Yorkton proclamation was advertised in three of their local newspapers; Yorkton This Week, This Week Marketplace and Briefly News. Thank you to Rik Cherland, Pat and Bonnie Flahr for their efforts.

Rik Cherland, a registered psychologist from Yorkton attended a City Council meeting where the proclamation for Psychology Month was discussed. This meeting and Rik’s presentation was then shown on the local Access 7 channel.

Linda Tholl, a registered psychologist from Regina was interviewed on CBC television for a segment on the topic of blended families. The interview went so well that they have asked her to do another interview.

Danielle Rozon, an Early Childhood Psychologist with Saskatoon Public Health Services wrote an article for the local weekly newspaper on the topic of “What is an Early Childhood Psychologist? She also advertised Psychology Month at one of the Public Health offices and plans to advertise psychology month 2009 in all the region’s health offices.

Bonnie Flahr, a registered psychologist who resides in North Battleford spoke to the psychology students at John Paul II Collegiate and provided hand-outs to the students.

Jason Peebles, a registered psychologist from Regina provided noon lunch bag lecture series at the Regina Public Library each Wednesday in February on various topics such as phobias, addictions and others.

TGIF evenings were held on the last Friday in February at local restaurants in Regina and Saskatoon. This provided a chance for psychologists to visit with their colleagues and network.

Ann Carson-Tempier placed posters throughout the University of Saskatchewan advertising the TGIF evening and Psychology Month with the purpose of engaging psychology students.

The “What is a Psychologist?” pamphlet was distributed throughout Saskatchewan to schools, health region offices and private practice offices. Psychologists throughout the province also distributed these pamphlets in their work settings. Pamphlets, posters and book marks were made available at the Saskatchewan Education Psychologist’s annual fall conference.

Psychologists in Saskatchewan were emailed encouraging them to become involved with Psychology month and to display their Psychology Month poster that was distributed to all psychologists in the province in 2007. Thank you to Wendy at the College for distributing these emails.

The Saskatoon Health Region psychologists held their annual eat, meet and learn session in February hosted by the Health Region’s Professional Leader of Psychology, Dr. Fern Stockdale-Winder. Dr. Philip Carverhill spoke on the topic of grief.

La Ronge and Yorkton area psychologists got together in their respective communities to network and discuss local issues.

Thank you to everyone who assisted with making Psychology month 2008 a success in Saskatchewan.
